Favorite Teas of Green Reaper Farm
Singature Tea
Making this blend takes time and patience and the flavor is worth it! Plants are harvested in the mid-morning, after the dew has dried for optimal flavor. First, elderflowers bloom in early summer and have to be harvested quickly with no stems left behind. The flowers have incredible flavor, are rich in antioxidants and boost the immune system. They also aid in respiratory health, relieve sinus congestion and have anti-inflamatory properties that can be used in skincare products. Lavender begins to bloom at the same time and its fragrance can reduce anxiety and depression, improving sleep quality. It also helps with respiratory health, relieves headaches and supports digestive health and healthy skin. The tea would not be complete without the flavor of Lemon Balm with its bright citrusy flavor and similar health benefits of lavender. It also helps improve cognitive functions and memory. Blackberry leaves take the longest to branch out because only leaves from small branches with no fruits are taken. Its smooth and refreshing flavor completes the tea and regulates blood sugar levels, soothes sore throats and in addition to the same health benefits of lemon balm and lavender is rich in vitamin C.
Liver Detox Tea
Ginger is the prominent flavor in this tea and although it is not grown on the farm, I dehydrate organic roots and powder them in an herb grinder. The next ingredient is dandelion root powder, then chicory root powder. This blend regulates blood pressure and blood pressure, aids in kidney health and digestion. It can sooth an upset stomach and promotes gut health.
Sunburst Mint Tea
Mint with a wonderful burst of orange combines together to make a very flavorful tea that is refreshing and hydrating. It relieves stress and improves one's mood, improves respiratory health and aids in digestion. Rich in antioxidants and vitamin A, C and K, it also boosts the immune system and has anti-inflammatory properties. Other ingredients are raspberry powder, tarragon and dead nettle which add nutrients and give the tea a fuller flavor.
Headache Relief Tea
This tea has a wonderful flavor that is very soothing for variety of reasons, but is most commonly known to help get rid of headaches. Feverfew is the prominent ingredient which is also known as the 'woman's herb' because it relieves menstrual cramps, bloating and improves one's mood and reduces anxiety. Lavender is the perfect compliment with its soothing smell and flavor with similar qualites to feverfew. Mint and lemon balm come next which aid in digestion and improve sleep quality, are rich in antioxidants and improve skin health.
Healing Plants and Poisionous Plants
Nature is full of plants that cause irritation and health problems and their healing counterparts. It is one of the great mysteries of nature that often they grow right next to each other. While on the trail, if you find a plant that causes a rash, you will most likely find the cure within a few feet of the source of your pain.
Ragweed and Its Cures
Ragweed can cause a rash when touched and cause severe allergic reactions that lead to asthma attacks. It is very invasive and irritating and it is best to pull it with your skin fully covered. Its cures are as follows:Jewelweed
This is the fastest cure for the ragweed rash. It grows near ponds and lakes and the orange orchid-like flower attracts hummingbirds. Once the stem is spliced open, a gel comes out that is similar to Aloe Vera that is a wonderful healer.Himilayan Basalm
In the Jewelweed family, this plant has similar healing properties and has been used in salves and poultices for centuriesComfrey
This plant has cultivated and wild varieties and can cure almost any topical problem. It is rough on the outside but when cut and mashed it releases a gel that is where the healing ability is. It is best used infused into oil and then put onto skin after the vitamins and gel have been extracted.Plantian Leaves
Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, this simple plant releases the healing qualities it has when crushed. It is often overlooked because it is so common. You can find it growing in the lawn, from the crack in your sidewalk or maybe mistake it for a weed in your garden.Herbal Tea
To relieve the symptoms of ragweed pollen, Peppermint, Elderflower, Chamomile, Tumeric or Ginger tea are wonderful ways to sooth sneezing, an itchy throat and watery eyes.
Poison IvyThis plant is hated and feared and is usually considered the most annoying plant in the forest. I grew up being taught to be afraid of it, but managing it is more simple than most people realize. The easiest way to deal with it is to pull it with no exposed skin and wash everything it comes in contact with thoroughly. An oil infusion with jewelweed, comfrey, plantain and lavender is very soothing and can be made into soap and salve that will cure poison ivy quickly and efficiently. The herbs cause the oil to smell like celery and extra lavender essential oil helps to take over the smell and make it more pleasant. The stems of jewelweed should be spliced down the middle and roughly chopped. Plantain and comfrey should be mashed with a mortar and pestle and lavender can be put into any carrier oil as is with no special preparation. It is better to use more Jewelweed than all the other plants but no exact measurements are needed. Anything you can find quickly will do the trick.
Stinging Nettle or Wood NettleThe tiny, annoying needles from this plant get under the skin and cause redness and swelling. The burning can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days. Washing your skin with soap and water should be the first thing you do. Next, a paste made from baking soda and water should be applied. Afterwards, herbal salves expedite the cure and relieve pain. When boiled correctly, both of these plants can be used in ancient cures but that this is written to fix skin problems that may occur in nature accidentally.Yarrow
While on the trail, the anti-inflammatory properties in this herb can sure almost any skin condition almost right away when made into a poultice with no other ingredients. It can soothe the pain of the stinging nettle rash instantly, but continuous application is necessary until it completely goes away. When making a salve, it is the most important ingredient.Calendula, Lavender & Chamomile
These wonderful plants have soothing and anti-inflammatory qualities make wonderful salve ingredients and ointment made from it can cure almost any rash. They become an even greater healer when mixed with other herbs.Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe Vera plants are a wonderful house plant that is easy to grow and use. Once the stem has been spliced open, the gel can be applied directly to the skin or the pulp can be scooped away from the ski and put in the blender, then put into a fine mesh strainer which separates the gel from the pulp. Salve with fresh aloe vera gel is not shelf stable and can last in the refrigerator for 3 months. Aloe vera gel from the store has preservatives and chemicals and it is best to use it fresh.Plantain
This plant is the easiest to find and use. There are broadleaf or flat leaf species and their blooms can also be used. This plant can be used infused into oil or crushed and applied topically when outside and oil is not available.
Poison OakTo alleviate the symptoms of poison oak, jewelweed gel, aloe vera gel, crushed plantain or calendula ointment can be applied directly to the skin or made into a homemade salve.
Poison HemlockThis plant is highly toxic but tricky to identify. It appears harmless and its look-alikes are queen Anne's lace, yarrow, wild carrots, parsnip and many other similar plants. A mature plant can be identified by its height, as it grows 12 feet tall. The stems of Queen Anne's lace as hairy, which the stems of hemlock are smooth and glossy and get purple splotches. It has a musty, unpleasant smell that is distinct from its look-alikes. When it is immature, it is the hardest to identify. A plant app is the easiest way to distingish it from anything else. There is no herbal cure after coming into contact with this lethal weed and it is important to go to the hospital immediately. This plant should never come in contact with exposed skin.
